At a restaurant, one used to simply order a dozen oysters. But these days, raw bars include menus of dozens of different oysters to choose from. Kumamotos are prized on the West Coast, Wellfleets are beloved in New England, New Yorkers love their Blue Points. There are however, just five species of oysters harvested in the U.S.; all other differences come from where they mature, and the waters they filter.
There are technically five types of oysters in the world. Here they all are:
Crassostrea Gigas–Pacific Oyster
Crassostrea Sikamea–Kumamoto Oyster
Crassostrea Virginicas–Atlantic Oyster
Ostrea Edulis–European Flat
Ostrea Lurida–Olympia Oysters
This is a reproduction of a hand drawn and watercolored rendition of these species by Marcella Kriebel. Purchase with our without a frame.
This Dungeness crab watercolor pays homage to my favorite type of West Coast crustacean. These purple and orange crabs mingle with seaweed and rocks on the ocean floor, their claws out ready to defend but also to catch their next meal.

During very low tides along the West Coast, you can see the wonderland of tidepools: anemones, barnacles, sea stars, mussels...It is truly magical. This print pairs well with the Salmon and Dungeness Crab for a coastal trio.

The Atlantic blue crab is regionally referred to as the Chesapeake blue crab, a species native to the waters of the western Atlantic Ocean as well as the Gulf of Mexico. Residents of the Mid-Atlantic are very enthusiastic fans of the blue crab and can't seem to get enough of their favorite crustacean.

The steelhead is a type of rainbow trout, native to the Pacific ocean, Asia and parts of North America. Steelhead are born in freshwater, migrates to the ocean for adulthood and returns to freshwater to reproduce. A favorite of fly fishermen.
