Behind The Scenes: DC Community Gardens Print

Did you know there are over 50 community run gardens in Washington, DC? That’s what I found out while doing research for my DC Community Gardens Map print. As an gardener with my own plot at the LeDroit Community Park, I wanted to show some appreciation for the thriving community gardens all across Washington, DC. Our community gardens are providing space for urban dwellers and make our city a little greener.

To create an accurate representation of the gardens, I paired up local non-profit Neighborhood Farm Initiative. Together, we researched and identified all the current community gardens formally recognized by the DC Department of Parks and Recreation. Thanks to a google layer that was created, we were able to make great progress.  While there are many more private and guerrilla gardens, the gardens on the map represent those registered with DPR and on public lands. If you live in DC, do you know where the closest community garden is to your home?
